William Cowper (1731-1800) was a poet, hymn-writer and man of letters. His poetry, dealing with nature and everyday life made him a forerunner of the Romantic Movement. His first volume, Poems by William Cowper, of the Inner Temple, published in 1782, received wide acclaim. He also translated Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey into blank verse.
