Candlestick is back – with a trio of exciting titles edited by leading poets

Published on Friday 25 June 2021

Candlestick’s brand new mini-anthologies embrace three delightfully contrasting themes and mark a spirited return to publishing after a pandemic-induced pause.

Ten Poems from the Countryside (edited by Irish poet Seán Hewitt) is a celebration of our rural landscapes. There are poems of rhapsody with larks singing overhead alongside others in which mud and bad weather remind us that it’s not all bliss and beauty. Featuring poets ranging from Vita Sackville-West to Kayo Chingonyi, this is a selection that delights in the infinite variety of the world beyond our towns and cities.

After a year when time has acted in strange ways, Ten Poems about Getting Older (edited by John McCullough) explores the perils and thrills of ageing. This is an anthology of poems about the interesting and surprising things we find out as we move through life. The poems are thought-provoking and enlivening – and certainly never glum.

Ten Poems about Work explores the complexities of our relationship with the things we have to do to earn a living. At a time when many of us have had to work in a very different way, the poems (selected by Welsh Poet Jonathan Edwards) are a reminder that our jobs are a vital part of who we are and, as such, are to be celebrated in all their dullness and/or glory.
