    Howard, Henry Earl of Surrey

    Henry Howard (1517 – 1547) was the oldest son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, and Lady Elizabeth Stafford. He and Sir Thomas Wyatt were the first English poets to write in the sonnet form later used by Shakespeare, and Surrey was the first English poet to publish work in blank verse, in his translation of the second and fourth books of Virgil’s Aeneid.
