Felicia Hemans (1793-1835) was a popular and highly respected poet of her time, with a following in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Her several works include the poetry collections, The Restoration of the Works of Art to Italy (1816), The Forest Sanctuary (1825) and the poem, Casabianca, with its famous first line, ‘The boy stood on the burning deck’. She also wrote songs, prose pieces and plays. Her circle of friends included many of the Romantic poets.
