A record year for Candlestick Press

A record year for Candlestick Press

Published on Wednesday 22 January 2020

Candlestick has just achieved its best-ever year, with 2019 sales a dramatic 34% up on 2018. We sold 101,475 poetry pamphlets in a year which saw the launch of 12 new titles.

This record performance was underpinned by some resounding commercial successes; our top seller was Ten Poems about Walking with sales of over 5,000 copies, closely followed by Ten Poems about Trees and Ten Poems about Bees.

Also in 2019 The Times selected Ten Poems about Snow as one of its ‘five best collectible books for Christmas’. Ten Poems about Trees was picked as a Poetry Book of 2019 by Poetry Wales and Candlestick’s two Christmas pamphlets both featured in the Poetry Book Society’s Top Ten Gift Guide.

Publisher Di Slaney says:

“We’ve had a remarkable year. Over 101,000 pamphlets sold means over 1 million poems read. That’s quite a thrilling statistic. We’re also delighted to have donated 49% of our pre-tax net profit to 22 selected charities.”

In 2020 Candlestick is planning to publish 15 new titles and will be embarking on an exciting venture with a new product line.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our customers, stockists, editors and poets who helped us to make 2019 our best ever year. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Our selection of poems takes in many of these yearly delights. There are contemporary voices – a poem in which a dog sniffs around a city park and enjoys the new smells, and another where an […]

A bouquet is a welcome and beautiful thing, but the beauty is inevitably short-lived.
