Mrs Malone, first published in 1951, is a religious
poem about the triumph of love over hardship and isolation – it
testifies to the truth that it only takes one person to open their door
and a whole community forms.
The heroine is the elderly and lonesome…
‘…Mrs Malone
Whose havings were few
And whose holding was small
And whose heart was so big
It had room for us all....’
Adults and children alike have enjoyed the story of Mrs Malone over
the years. The illustrations by Edward Ardizzone perfectly complement
the poem.
Eleanor Farjeon (1881 – 1965) wrote the words to the hymn, ‘Morning
has broken…’. Less well known is that she was the author of
over eighty books of poetry, plays, novels and short stories. She moved
in literary circles (her friends included D.H. Lawrence, Edward Thomas
and many other leading writers) and by the 1930s she was well established
on the literary scene.
She was a lover of all animals (but especially cats) and her cottages
in Hampstead and Sussex were homes to many four-legged visitors.
